FDA STREAMLINES VACCINATION AND DRUG-REPORTING SYSTEMS USING INFORMATICA DATA INTEGRATION PLATFORM
Informatica software helps increase productivity, reduce costs and simplify maintenance for the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 24, 2003 - Informatica Corporation (NASDAQ: INFA), the leading provider of business analytics software, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) has successfully implemented the Informatica data integration platform to integrate and analyze data about adverse reactions to vaccines and biological products in order to help improve regulatory oversight.
Given increased concern about public health and bio-terrorist activity, CBER provides data tracking and analysis in support of its mission “to protect and enhance the public health through the regulation of biological and related products including blood, vaccines, tissue, gene therapy products, allergenics and biological therapeutics.” The Informatica data integration platform acts as the infrastructure to support CBER's use of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and the broader-based Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS), which track known adverse medical reactions to FDA-approved vaccine and biological products, respectively.
“The ability to access and analyze high-quality data about adverse reactions to vaccinations is essential to protecting public health. Having the means to leverage all of our Center's data is critical to carrying out our regulatory responsibilities,” said Philip Perucci, project officer for software development at the FDA's CBER. “The Informatica data integration platform supports our need for up-to-date access to critical adverse information reporting, and increases our productivity through streamlined maintenance.”
The rapid pace of change in today's healthcare and biotechnology industries further complicates CBER's data integration efforts. Merger and acquisition activity has resulted in frequent company and product-name changes, which increases challenges associated with maintaining the consistency and reliability of their data. CBER is using the Informatica data integration platform to address these concerns and automate its data integration by replacing some of the center's legacy methods of hand coding.
“We're honored to have the FDA among the extensive list of federal agencies relying on Informatica's data integration platform to increase the reliability and accessibility of critical information,” said Sanjay Poonen, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Informatica. “Our data integration platform helps ensure that the highest level of end-to-end data integrity is delivered to CBER users - enabling them to turn tactical data into actionable insight.”
