Informatica Corporation (Nasdaq:INFA), the world’s number one independent provider of data integration software, today announced that the Network Rail (NR) ORBIS (Offering Rail Better Information Services) program, which is a major ‘Asset Information’ enhancement initiative, has chosen the Informatica Platform as one of the solutions to be used to gain a return on data
Asset Information is Network Rail’s infrastructure information services business unit that collects, evaluates, collates, analyses and communicates information. This information enables accurate, informed decisions to be made to balance cost, risk and performance, supporting operational effectiveness and efficiency and driving down costs.
Network Rail runs, maintains and develops Britain’s 22,000 linear miles of rail network, over 6,500 level crossings, a vast signaling infrastructure, approximately 43,000 bridges, viaducts, tunnels and 17 key stations. Every day, Network Rail replaces an average of 1.6 miles of track and annually around 750,000 concrete, steel or timber sleepers plus 2.8 million metric tons of ballast.
Asset Information will use the Informatica Platform - including Informatica Master Data Management (MDM), Informatica PowerCenter and Informatica Data Quality - to increase the value of data by delivering consistent, accurate and timely data across Network Rail’s systems.
Ensuring authoritative data for these assets will help Network Rail to be more effective and efficient in maintaining and operating its’ assets. Combined with other initiatives, such as the use of smart phones, this will enable maintenance teams to access a wide-range of data quickly in the field and report asset information back to one central source. For example:
The ORBIS Master Data Management Project will implement the Informatica Platform to create a consolidated, accurate picture of every track asset, including switches and crossings and level crossings. It will also introduce ‘golden record’ management for where each asset is located, usage and what condition it is in. Trustworthy, actionable and authoritative information about these assets will enable Network Rail to manage asset renewal and maintenance programs more effectively.
Subsequent ORBIS projects will integrate assets of all disciplines into a single Rail Infrastructure Network Model, or railway system model, increasing the insight into the capability and capacity of the network through a greater understanding of how assets interact together. This single version of the truth will then be used to enable exploitation of the existing rail network to identify opportunities for the creation of additional capacity within existing constraints.
Network Rail is partnering with Capgemini to implement the ORBIS Master Data Management Project. Network Rail selected Informatica based on the company’s best-of-breed technology, Capgemini’s recommendation and both Informatica and Capgemini’s understanding of Network Rail’s aims and objectives.
Patrick Bossert Director of Network Rail’s Asset Information services business says, “The Informatica solution, associated processes and quality metrics will help us to embed Asset Information data management efficiently and effectively within Network Rail. This will help us improve the information we manage about our assets and their condition. Having more accurate and reliable information will enable Asset Information’s customers to make better informed business decisions, enabling controlled innovation in our asset management policy, planning and execution, and better rail-system-wide investment decisions that benefit the rail industry as a whole.”
“Like so many other Informatica customers, Network Rail is transforming its organization to gain the greatest value out of its data by increasing the value of data and lowering the cost to manage and access it,” said Girish Pancha, chief product officer, Informatica. “Designed to promote standardization and reuse, the Informatica Platform will enable Network Rail to turn rail infrastructure data into trustworthy, actionable and authoritative information assets.”
