Network Rail

Network Rail has responsibility for the maintenance and operational efficiency of the 22,000 miles of track system in the United Kingdom. The railway had reached a point where each year:

  • Nearly 1.7 billion passenger journeys are made - more than twice as many as in 1995.
  • A million more trains run than just ten years ago.
  • More than 34 million tons of freight is transported by rail between Britain’s ports, factories and warehouses.
  • This ever-increasing demand means that at peak times, there is no space left on the busiest parts of the network, which leads to congestion and delays.

Network Rail needed to move from a planned maintenance model to a predictive maintenance model to reduce costs and increase service efficiency.

Network Rail used Informatica MDM, PowerCenter and Data Quality and partnered with Capgemini to implement Linear Asset Decision Support (LADS). LADS provides a single view of over 80 asset systems (trains, crossings, bridges, tunnels, etc.) which has dramatically improved efficiency. Network Rail has reached a savings target of $70 million annually by implementing a predictive maintenance regime that has replaced the old planned maintenance approach. Even better, train arrival time has risen dramatically (91%) after taking over the running of Britain’s railway in 2002 which means fewer delays for its passengers.
