Belgacom International Carrier Services (BICS) is one of the world’s top carriers for international voice & mobile data traffic, with more than 100 global points of presence. The European Union plans to abolish data-roaming charge in 2017. As a result, data-roaming traffic is expected to increase by up to 200% per year resulting in a 100% increase in data growth. Big data challenges include processing large volumes of data faster in order to address near real time reporting and analytics requirements. BICS found the planning and monitoring of its network performance more and more challenging due to increased traffic, global expansion and cross-border management, plus the conveyor-belt development of products, services and technologies. Increasing customer value was, by default, a continually-evolving process. BICS implemented a Unified Data Architecture (UDA) using the Teradata Hadoop Appliance, Informatica Big Data Management, Teradata EDW and Qlikview. This initiative provides a complete view on all roaming activities up to subscriber level, helping them to define their strategy, improve the quality of the roaming experience, decide on better targeted campaigns to the end-user and assure roaming revenue streams to the customers of BICS.
