Informatica Acquires Siperian

A Leader in the MDM Infrastructure Technology Category

Ivan Chong

Most organizations are awash with data including customer and related business entities such as product, supplier, organization, and employee. But making sense of this data, understanding the complex relationships existing among them, and identifying real-time changes is an enormous challenge. Key data assets are not actionable because data is distributed across the organization in disparate systems, and is in conflict or incomplete, and cannot be easily shared across the company.

Master Data Management (MDM) provides a holistic, single view of foundational business entities, commonly referred to as master data, such as customers, employees, citizens, locations and products. Successful MDM projects facilitate better operational efficiency, higher customer loyalty, and successful compliance efforts. According to an independent report, 49% of organizations were planning to implement or expand their use of MDM software in 2009 (“Trends 2009: Master Data Management”, Forrester Research, Inc., October 2009).

With the acquisition of Siperian, Informatica offers customers leading products in the MDM Infrastructure category. Unlike traditional products, Siperian delivers a multidomain MDM platform to optimize business decisions across multiple entities or considerations.

Siperian solutions provide three key capabilities:

  • Proven, Multidomain MDM – enabling organizations to optimize business decisions across multiple entities.
  • Fast Time to Value – expediting time to value through model-driven, easy-to-configure capabilities as well as a sophisticated code-free environment to match, merge and de-duplicate to create the golden record.
  • Built-in Trust Metrics – ensuring greater confidence in master data for business stakeholders with built-in ratings metrics for trustworthiness.

Founded in April 2001, Siperian is an award-winning visionary pioneer offering well-differentiated products. In 2009, Siperian won the “Product of the Year” award from searchdatamanagement.com. Most recently, Siperian was named the “Editor’s Pick” by the Consumer Goods Technology magazine.

More than 60 customers worldwide successfully rely on Siperian including leaders in Life Sciences and Financial Services. These customers include Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Systems, Shire, Bank of America, State Street Bank, and Lexis Nexis. Siperian’s unique multi-domain MDM approach enabled Johnson & Johnson to generate $15 million in value through greater efficiency in processing rebates and related activities. Differentiated easy-to-configure capabilities enabled St. Jude Medical to deploy a physician spend data hub in only ten weeks. And distinctive built-in ratings metrics for trustworthiness helped Lexis Nexis increase revenues by avoiding missed sales opportunities from their 3.2 million subscribers. In fact, a study of 400 MDM projects conducted by the industry analyst group Aberdeen concluded that organizations relying on Siperian achieved over 50% better business results, as measured by customer retention and cross-sell rates, compared to those relying on IBM.

The acquisition of Siperian advances Informatica’s technology leadership in two fundamental ways. First, it allows Informatica to offer a well-differentiated infrastructure product that automates MDM, one of the fastest growing types of broader data integration projects. Second, the combination of Siperian products and the comprehensive Informatica platform will deliver even more differentiated value to customers such as the use of Informatica B2B Data Exchange to share master data across the supply chain partner network.

“The acquisition of Siperian will expand Informatica’s addressable market with an additional high-growth, adjacent technology category, MDM infrastructure, and will further strengthen our key strategic partnerships. Informatica Data Integration and Data Quality have a proven track record of enabling successful MDM projects. Together, we will advance Informatica as a leader in this exciting MDM Infrastructure category.”
