The Challenge: Bridging the Gap in Today's Digital Enterprise

In today's digital-first world, large enterprises rely on vast and ever-expanding ecosystems of software applications, often with 500 or more SaaS applications. These tools are essential for daily operations, from customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) to human resources and marketing platforms. However, the true power lies not in individual applications but in how seamlessly they connect and share information.

Integration of these disparate systems is critical to:

  • Automate core business processes
  • Enable smooth data exchange
  • Unlock new revenue opportunities

Yet, traditional application integration projects are notoriously complex. Current integration tools often lack intuitive guidance and comprehensive insights, leading to inefficiencies and errors. They require deep technical knowledge of various APIs, data formats and communication protocols.

While low-code/no-code platforms have lowered the barrier somewhat, they still present a significant learning curve and user interface complexity that frequently hinder adoption. Business users without specialized technical expertise find these platforms challenging to navigate.

The consequences are clear: prolonged project timelines, reliance on costly external consultants and significant risks associated with maintaining poorly documented legacy integrations, especially when the original developers have moved on. This complexity overwhelms even seasoned integration developers and renders integration nearly impossible for business users without technical skills.

The Solution: Introducing Cloud Application Integration Copilot – AI-Powered Simplicity

Rapid generative AI (GenAI) advancements have created a transformative opportunity to redefine application integration. We recognized the potential to enhance productivity, simplify learning curves and dramatically lower the barriers to building and maintaining critical integration workflows expressed in natural language. This vision is at the heart of Cloud Application Integration (CAI) Copilot. CAI Copilot acts as an intelligent assistant, guiding you through workflow creation and providing clear, concise summaries of existing integrations — all within a simple, chat-like interface. This approach fosters stronger understanding and collaboration between technical and business teams alike.

Key Capabilities: What CAI Copilot Delivers Today

Figure 1: This shows CLAIRE Copilot in action with recommended queries.

Our vision for CAI Copilot is grounded in a deep understanding of the pressing challenges faced in application integration. Today, Copilot focuses on two core areas:

Accelerating Process Creation

Traditionally, building enterprise-grade workflows involves meticulous, multi-step efforts, including:

  • Selecting the appropriate source and target applications
  • Defining precise data mappings
  • Orchestrating complex multi-step flows
  • Implementing robust error handling, retries and notifications

CAI Copilot revolutionizes this process. You simply describe your integration use case in natural language — no more hunting through complex low-code canvases. Through conversational prompts, Copilot clarifies intentions. It will then help you:

  • Identify and select necessary connections
  • Pinpoint relevant data objects
  • Generate an end-to-end integration flow, down to detailed field mappings

Beyond creation, Copilot intelligently optimizes processes, often recommending parallel execution to boost efficiency.

Example Use Case: Automatically onboarding new customers
Sample Prompt: "When a new customer is created in Salesforce, create a corresponding customer record in SAP ERP and then send a welcome email through Marketo."

CAI Copilot’s response:

  • Recognizes “Salesforce,” “SAP ERP” and “Marketo” as the required application connections
  • Confirms “Customer” object in Salesforce, “Customer Master” object in SAP ERP and “Send Email” action in Marketo
  • Constructs a comprehensive, multi-step integration flow

Simplifying Process Summarization

Integration workflows can become highly intricate, involving multiple applications, complex data transformations and conditional logic. Understanding these workflows can take days for new team members or business users, often requiring coordination with several experts, which slows down time-to-market for new initiatives.

Copilot’s intelligent summarization feature makes understanding complex workflows effortless. With a simple prompt, one can receive clear, detailed summaries explaining the purpose of the process in plain language. This empowers both citizen integrators and experienced developers to:

  • Quickly onboard to new or existing processes
  • Identify potential bottlenecks

Specifically, Copilot provides:

  • Business Insight: A high-level overview of the integration’s purpose, its impact on business operations and the key entities involved, helping you grasp why integration exists and its value.
  • Detailed Step-by-Step Description: A granular breakdown of each action performed — including the involved applications, data moves or transformations and conditional logic — making workflows understandable to technical and non-technical users alike.

Behind the Scenes: The Intelligence Powering CAI Copilot

CAI Copilot is a product of carefully chosen design principles and a robust architecture that harnesses state-of-the-art generative AI capabilities.

The Hybrid AI Brain: Choosing the Right Model for the Task

Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, we adopted a sophisticated hybrid architecture leveraging specialized AI models:

  • Large Language Models (LLMs) for Understanding and Conversation: These general-purpose models handle open-ended tasks, such as summarizing workflows, recognizing entities in user requests and managing natural, conversational flow within Copilot. They excel at interpreting human language to generate high-level business insights.
  • Domain-Tuned Models for Building Integrations: Generating precise workflow processes requires deep domain-specific knowledge. We fine-tuned the model using a simplified workflow structure called the Intermediate Language Representation (ILR), which focuses on essential workflow steps. This approach allowed us to minimize noise in the data, resulting in significantly improved response accuracy.

Architecture: A Coordinated Intelligence Network

Figure 2: An overview of the CAI Copilot architecture.

CAI Copilot is built on a layered architecture designed for power, security and precision:

  • Foundation: Seamless integration with Informatica’s AI-powered CLAIRE layer provides a unified AI framework across all Informatica products, helping maintain conversation history and context for a natural, continuous user experience.
  • Conversation Orchestrator (Conversation State Processor - CSP): This core intelligence manages user interactions with Copilot. Acting as a “process sentinel,” it coordinates user input to drive process creation using a ReAct (Reasoning + Action) agent approach. The CSP:
    • Understands user intent from conversations
    • Detects critical elements like applications, data objects and connections
    • Builds a structured “workflow prompt” for the domain-tuned AI model, ensuring that it receives only well-formed, relevant information for high accuracy
  • Schema Intelligence Hub (SIH): Functioning as a sophisticated librarian of application schemas, SIH empowers CSP with an intelligent Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline. This allows Copilot to instantly recommend the right objects and applications when designing workflows, ensuring precise, context-aware support.

The Path Ahead: Expanding Copilot’s Horizons

CAI Copilot’s evolution promises an even more powerful and intuitive experience for developers and business users alike:

  • XQuery Generation through Natural Language: Generating complex XQuery expressions for transformation and data extraction is a major challenge. Soon, users can describe their requirements in simple natural language, and Copilot will generate the necessary XQueries behind the scenes.
  • Effortless Editing of Existing Processes: Beyond creating workflows, Copilot will enable you to easily edit and enhance existing processes, bringing simplicity and intelligence to ongoing integration maintenance.
  • Service Connector Support: Future support for service connectors will make API integration effortless. The Copilot will act as a smart guide, helping you find and configure the right APIs for your needs. This intelligent assistance eliminates complexity and guesswork, allowing you to connect to a wide range of services beyond native support
  • Feedback Loop: Copilot will incorporate user feedback to continuously improve accuracy and capabilities based on real-world interactions and suggestions.
