Meeting evolving client expectations through data modernization

As a leading diagnostic and clinical testing organization, Labcorp recognized that data is its core product. “Our catalyst was the need to meet our clients’ rapidly evolving data expectations,” says Patrick Taylor, Executive Director, Global Data Solutions. Modernizing the data ecosystem was essential not only to remain competitive but also to transform from a traditional “order taker” into a strategic partner delivering value-added, data-driven insights.

Future-proofing with cloud-native architecture

Labcorp decided to move from on-premises to cloud-native architecture when it became clear that legacy systems could no longer keep pace with rapid data technology innovation. “Cloud-native architecture allows us to future-proof our services, maintain greater flexibility and better meet client needs in a fast-changing environment,” Taylor explains.

A meaningful journey with Informatica IDMC

Labcorp’s modernization journey began with partnering with Informatica on the Intelligent Cloud Services (IICS) platform to replace its in-house ETL solution. Today, Labcorp relies on IDMC for data transformation and delivery, and is expanding into additional comparison and processing capabilities. The team is also exploring Informatica’s Data Governance solutions and Marketplace opportunities to further democratize reporting.

Evolving modern data governance

“Data governance has historically been a challenge for us, and previous attempts at enterprise-wide governance didn’t stick,” Taylor admits. However, commercialization and near-real-time data expectations have elevated governance from a “nice to have” to a competitive necessity. Labcorp’s perspective shifted from viewing governance as a compliance function to recognizing it as the foundation of trustworthy, high-value data that builds client confidence and industry relevance.

Delivering tangible benefits to patients and clients

Labcorp is implementing on-demand data sharing capabilities that allow clinical trial sponsors to access near-real-time lab testing datasets through flexible tabled sharing experiences. This supports full ingestion, partial ingestion or targeted queries, accelerating complex study decisions and analyses. Additionally, Labcorp is developing a new external portal consolidating all study-level data into a single, intuitive location, giving clients seamless real-time visibility and actionable insights.

Building AI readiness into data strategy

“AI has been a core part of our data strategy for several years, and we’re intentionally thoughtful about where and how we implement it,” says Taylor. Labcorp is exploring AI-enabled capabilities for data extraction, quality improvement, insight generation and workflow optimization across internal and cross-company processes, anticipating AI’s growing influence in the industry.

Looking ahead: Unlocking data-driven culture and innovation

Taylor is most excited about the cultural shift toward data-driven decision-making at Labcorp. "While we’re a global life sciences and healthcare company driven by diagnostic and clinical testing, data is truly at the core of what we do. Modernizing our data ecosystem with Informatica is essential to staying competitive and enables us to establish strategic partnerships with our clients to deliver value-added, data-driven insights. I’m most excited about the cultural shift toward data-driven decision-making within Labcorp. Building strong governance foundations and delivering new data services to our clients in a more agile way through Informatica will directly support our goal of accelerating the development of lifesaving medicines.” His advice to organizations embarking on modernization journeys is to find a trusted partner early and lean on their expertise to reduce complexity, avoid rework and save time and resources.
