THAMES WATER SELECTS INFORMATICA POWERCENTER, POWERCONNECT TO HELP IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND DECREASE OPERATING COSTS

UK's largest water company looks to Informatica to consolidate critical enterprise data for strategic business analysis

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 3, 2000 - Informatica Corporation (NASDAQ: INFA), a leading provider of integrated analytic solutions for e-business, today announced that Thames Water plc, the largest water and sewage company in the UK, has chosen Informatica PowerCenter™ and Informatica PowerConnect™ for PeopleSoft to enable easier enterprise-wide access and analysis of key business information for strategic analysis. Thames Water plans to use the integrated Informatica solution to consolidate large volumes of data from numerous disparate systems across its enterprise, including its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and mainframe systems, to help gain greater insight into its business.

With 14,000 employees, 20 million customers and global operations across seven countries from China to Puerto Rico, Thames Water generates an enormous amount of operational data each day. Until recently, the company consolidated its wealth of information for analysis by individually extracting data from each system. Informatica's engine-based data-integration products were brought in to speed this process, reduce the IT resources needed and ultimately streamline decision making.

"Informatica will help provide us with a single version of the truth when it comes to our corporate data," said Jim Weir, senior IT project consultant, Thames Water. "We will be able to gather and integrate data from our key internal systems much more quickly and efficiently. The obvious benefit will be our ability to more easily assess information in order to make strategic business decisions. It will also allow information to be shared across business functions so that comparative analyses can be made."

Continued Weir, "We expect immediate cost savings from our implementation of Informatica through reduced programming costs. Data extraction, transformation and loading routines, which would normally require several months of programming, can be created in days or a few weeks using efficient products such as PowerCenter and PowerConnect for PeopleSoft. Most of the ongoing costs of data integration are incurred in maintaining the data interfaces from the source systems. PowerCenter holds the details of those interfaces in a metadata repository where changes can be made quickly and reliably, which can substantially reduce maintenance costs."

The use of both products will, for example, allow managers to easily compare the unit costs of water between different plants. This kind of information will be useful in controlling running costs and ultimately result in improved services to customers. Thames Water can also leverage its data for planning replacements and updates of equipment and facilities such as pipelines, waste-water cleansing units and reservoirs -- down to the last valve. Also, due to regulatory control, if the company is directed to reduce water leakage, accurately calculating the costs of achieving this reduction is crucial.

"Informatica's products have been designed to deliver a totally integrated solution, offering a fully flexible and scaleable platform suited to Thames Water's current and future data-analysis needs," said Clive Harrison, EVP worldwide sales operations at Informatica.

PowerCenter is an enterprise data-integration hub that enables large organizations to easily transform legacy, relational and ERP data into reliable information for strategic business analysis. PowerConnect for PeopleSoft enables companies to directly extract and integrate the vast amounts of corporate data stored in their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in order to leverage it for enterprise decision support.
