Indian Oil

Indian Oil’s (IOCL) network of over 43,000 customer touch-points brings petroleum products to every part of the country. The Indian government recently decontrolled petroleum prices paving the way for market driven pricing in a highly competitive market. IOCL needed to implement a dynamic pricing model that could be controlled at the corporate level through company-run retail outlets as well as distributorship/dealership.

 

 

Indian Oil faced challenges on the retail side of both the Petrol and LPG business to implement adequate centralized controls while maintaining agility in a distributed system. IOCL deployed a common platform for both businesses using the Real Time Streaming capabilities of the Informatica Platform consisting of the Vibe Data Stream and Real Time Data Integration components. The solution enabled the “Largest Cash Benefit Program” as recognized by the Guinness Book of World records, with Direct Benefit transfer affecting over 125 million households. Benefits expected and realized include:

  • Met the goals of the Indian Government to remove budget provisioning for LPG subsidy to the tune of roughly $1.5B USD
  • Saved $200M USD in a year preventing subsidy leakage by integrating consumer accounts across LPG companies in India
  • Created a flow of about $2B USD into the banking system while ensuring subsidy reached the correct end consumer
  • As per the CAG (Comptroller and auditor general of India) Report to the Government of India, the audited annual savings from this LPG initiative is to the tune of $470M USD
  • Enabled better decisions on dynamic pricing of petrol/gas and effective monitoring of stock and dispensing units at the retail outlets
  • Through proactive monitoring, enabled preventative maintenance and averted market dry out situations at petrol stations
  • Increased speed to market of sales promotion programs and activities to field with a more targeted consumer approach
  • Integrated multiple loyalty program across the company
  • Ensured faster policy implementation on both Petrol and LPG businesses
  • Enforced better controls with respect to marketing disciplinary guidelines issued by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas
  • Created a future infrastructure to enable integration of retail outlet
